The frequency of cleaning of the chimney varies by frequency of use of the hearth, wood type and construction of the fireplace. Generally customary to clean (1) once a year, but a good rule is to be cleaned every three (3) tons of wood combustion. 

Cleaning should be engineer-to-brush as it is the only cleaning that eliminates soot and blocking the chimney.
